The McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce announced Jerry E., a resident of The Courtyard at McHenry, as the recipient of the Frank E. Low Award, the Chamber’s highest recognition. The award acknowledges individuals who demonstrate a lifetime of selfless service, leadership, and commitment to the McHenry, IL community.
A Career in Education
Jerry and his wife, Trish, made McHenry their home as they began careers in education — careers that touched generations of local families. Jerry taught physical education and coached at McHenry Junior High before transitioning to a mathematics teaching role at Parkland Junior High. His influence extended far beyond the classroom through decades of mentoring students and athletes.
Decades of Community Service
Officiating and Athletics
In addition to his work in education, Jerry devoted fifty seasons to officiating basketball and football, earning the distinction of officiating multiple Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state championship games. He also supported community programs by working seasonally with the McHenry Parks Department.
Church and Youth Support
Jerry dedicated countless hours to service through his church, including helping provide backpacks and supplies for students in need. His work consistently focused on supporting young people and families throughout the area.
Building Lasting Relationships
Jerry’s greatest legacy is his ability to connect with people. Known affectionately by generations of former students and athletes, he is nearly impossible to run into in McHenry without being greeted by someone whose life he has touched. His relationships — built on kindness, respect, and genuine care — demonstrate the impact one individual can have over a lifetime of service.
Family Life
Jerry and Trish reside in McHenry, where they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. He remains deeply involved with his children, Jenny and Greg, and his seven grandchildren.
